Following Laird's lead. Here's a few thing about the Paragon.
As some of you may, or may not realise, my character is a Paragon. (Admittedly, given the topic, that's not really much of a surprise). I've been playing him for over a year now and have contributed to most types of gameplay available in GW. Including streaking through the Guild Hall much to the chagrin of any other players in there.
Hey, when you look this good, you gotta share it with the world!
So here are some pointers.
| Quote: | 1. There is no 'I' in team.
The main argument against the Paragon is that it is 'underpowered'. And it probably could be considered that in a 1v1 match. The main function of a Paragon is to help you so that we, in return, have less chance of having a swarm of beasties surround us that could break our manicured fingernails.
But saying that, the most effective group I have ever been in is with another Paragon. By myself, I was having trouble reaching 'Ascension' in Prophecies. I grouped with another Paragon who was having similar trouble and we then went on to storm through all 3 tasks. You could say that it's simply because it was another player, or because we complimented each other seeing as we both knew how the Paragon worked (the same argument could be used should there be 2 profession instances in any team), but nevertheless I still believe my point stands.
We thrive through teamwork. If you don't believe me then take a Paragon along in a quest or something and see how many of the buffs/shouts etc you get come from them.
In the end.. we <3 joo.
2. Energy Management
The Paragon gets quite a nice pool of energy to play with...at a crappy recharge rate. 2 pips really are a slap in the face but we have a rather nice way to get around that. Simply said, it's the 'Leadership' attribute. Every shout, chant, echo that we make gives us energy - depending of course how many people are in the team. Should you choose to become a Paragon, make sure you have plenty of attribute points in the Leadership one.
Took me over 2 months to work that one out..... Kept wondering why I suddenly had energy. In my defence - I was new.
3. Choose your leadership type
Out of the 4 attributes, you're going to have to make the decision as to which one you're going to lack in. Leadership is pretty much a neccessity so that's one down, 3 to go.
Will you choose to be a more aggressive Paragon and choose Spear Mastery? It has some 'semi-decent' interrupt and condition skills but more importantly, the spear is a relatively high-damage weapon. A higher Spear Mastery increases your damage dealing ability plus your chance to get a critical hit.
Or will you be a Commander? Using shouts, you can buff your troops in battle - much like a general. Harden their resolve! Give them instructions on how to turn the battle in their favour! This attribute deals more with physical abilities rather than spellcasting support.
How about becoming a Motivational speaker? By doing so, you'll be helping all across the various profession ranges. Energy boosting, health regeneration, adrenaline increases - it all becomes yours to use to help your party. Do not underestimate the power of motivation!
4. 'Healing'
Pay no attention to the Paragon's inherent 'Healing' abilities. Yes, they're quite nice because everyone is affected but by no means use a Paragon as a replacement for a monk. As Laird so rightfully pointed out, Monks have the awesome attribute of 'Divine Favour'. We just can't compete with that kind of godly intervention. At best, we use our abilities to 'top up' or relieve some of the tension from monks.
5. Interchangability
Finally, once you think you've nailed how to be a Paragon, try becoming your secondary profession for a while. Paragons have, arguably, the best chance of becoming something else due to their unique skills and capabilities. If you're bored with Spear chucking, then pick up a hammer and get into combat. You've got an max armour rating of 80 for goodness sake! If the warrior path isn't for you then try becoming an Elementalist or something. You've still got quite a nice pool of energy to choose from, and even with 0 Energy Storage, you can still use the Glyphs to some extent!
In the end, a Paragon is a 'Jack of all trades'. Yes, it has a good armour rating. Yes, the energy is pretty decent. And whilst these abilities are awesome, they won't beat being a primary of a different profession - but you'll still be a pretty effective copy. Hell, if you get good enough, you may end up beating some of the other primaries at their own game!
Try it out. You may surprise yourself! |
Thanks for reading. I'll, hopefully, be creating a new topic in the Paragon subsection of the professions forum with some of the builds I find most effective. Should you have any questions or queries, then give me a shout in game or in here. If you feel like you want/need a more personable tutorial then just give me a holler. As a 'Model of Excellence', it's kind of my duty (and pleasure) to help out. _________________

yeah. i agree with everything said so far the paragon is a vastly underestimated class. i think with lots of the none core classes (is that what they are called) they get under used by many many people, i mean is some one new comes to Factions or NightFall there are all those core classes that are well defined and then the two others that are fairly unique to GW and they just appeal to new players.
i think what arena net needs to do is 'promote' the chapter specific classes to make more of us try them out.
anyway bravo on the paragon article. i for one found it very interesting and although i refusing to split my title hunting focus at the moment i will be playing allot more Mesmer/Paragon if only to unlock the skills for the heroes. |
